I Walk Alone - Tarja Turunen

"I Walk Alone" is the first single from the album My Winter Storm by Tarja. It has been released on October 26, 2007 through Universal Music.

This song was written by Mattias Lindblom and Anders Wollbeck. It's inspired by a musical motif in "Requiem" by Mozart. It features a theater atmosphere accompanied by orchestra guitars and Turunen's powerful voice.

According to Turunen the song describes her personality perfectly well and identifies her as a singer.

Some fans have considered this as her response to Nightwish's "Bye Bye Beautiful," which was a song directed towards her. The song was a declaration of her independence and willingness to move on.

In 2009, the song was covered by the Norwegian singer Jorn on his album Spirit Black.

This video was shot at Devil's Lake in Berlin, Germany. It was directed by Jörn Heitmann (who had already worked with Turunen directing Nightwish's "Sleeping Sun" 2005 video). It also features four characters interpreted by Turunen herself. They are: the Phoenix, the Dead Boy, the Doll and the Queen of Ice.

Nightwish - The Kinslayer (Live)

"The Kinslayer" was a promotional single released by Drakkar to promote the Finnish symphonic power metal quintet Nightwish's album Wishmaster.

The song was written by keyboardist/bandleader Tuomas Holopainen and is about the Columbine high school massacre. It features a dialogue between Tarja Turunen and Ike Vil of Babylon Whores. It also includes a line from William Shakespeare's "The Tempest" which is said to be written by shooter Eric Harris on the page for Mother's day 1999 of his calendar. ("Good wombs hath borne bad sons.")

The song may also be written in reference to the Dragonlance series of fantasy novels. The line "Even the dead cry, their only comfort" is found in the book The Test Of The Twins, and the Kinslayer War was a major historical event in the Dragonlance universe.

Nightwish - Ever Dream (End of an Era)

"Ever Dream" was the group's first single release in two years. The single also preluded a new album, Century Child. It was number-one hit in Finland.

"Ever Dream" is of a more operatic nature than later works and the music itself is more on the heavy metal side.

In live performances of the song, the intro is played differently, with only the keyboard and vocals present for the first verse, before all the band come in after the intro.

This video comes from the Nighwish DVD called End of An Era.

Nightwish - Wishmaster (End of An Era) Live

The song "Wishmaster" has remained one of Nightwish's greatest hits, appearing on several best of compilations. Since its release, it has been a recurring track on live performances, and it was featured for example on the live DVD End of an Era, recorded in 2005. As of 2008, it's still often performed live despite the band's change of vocalists. The song was brought back to the metal community's mind by a cover version and video of metal a-cappella band van Canto in 2008.

Nightwish - Bye Bye Beautiful

"Bye Bye Beautiful" is the second track on Finnish quintet Nightwish’s Dark Passion Play album. The song was confirmed to be the third single from Dark Passion Play by Tuomas Holopainen in an interview, but it was changed to the fourth single from the album after the announcement of Erämaan Viimeinen's release as the third.

The single was released on February 15, 2008 in three versions, CD, DVD and 12 inch. It includes an DJ Orkidea Remix Version of the song as well as a demo version of "The Poet and the Pendulum" and Dark Passion Play's Japanese bonus track "Escapist".

The vocals are shared between the band’s two vocalists, Anette Olzon and Marco Hietala. He performs the chorus and the bridge. In the studio version of the chorus he sings "Did you ever let in what the world said" and "Did we play to become only pawns in the game?", but in live sessions he sings "Oh, let in what the world said" and "Did we play - only pawns in the game?" respectively, adding pauses, probably for breathing in.

In the first part of the Dark Passion Play tour, "Bye Bye Beautiful" was the standard opening track, which was played after an intro of "Resurrection" from the soundtrack of The Passion of the Christ. In 2009 it was replaced by "7 Days to the Wolves" and Tuomas Holopainen stated that the band is never going to play "Bye Bye Beautiful" live again.

"Bye Bye Beautiful" was written by Tuomas Holopainen about the band's former vocalist, Tarja Turunen, who was dismissed from the band with an open letter in 2005, and his feelings before and after the time she changed her attitude towards the band and its music. This was at first rumoured among fans and later revealed by Holopainen in an interview. The chorus also contains the lyrics “Did you ever read what I wrote you?/ Did you ever listen to what we played?” in which the first part is a reference to the lyrics written by Holopainen, and the second part is about her lack of dedication to the music.

In the video for "Bye Bye Beautiful", the four male members of the band are replaced by four female models throughout the verses. Despite speculation, Holopainen said in a Finnish interview that the female doubles in this video have nothing to do with the removal of Tarja Turunen from Nightwish, saying "It's just pure self-irony and rock 'n' roll". The four models are referring to the rumor going around the fans that Anette Olzon, the new singer, was chosen to attract more fans because of her looks. In the video, they are making fun of the rumor.

Nightwish - I Wish I Had An Angel

The song speaks of love and how it is so easily corrupted, and the pain resulting there from. “I wish I had your angel” - I wish I had your innocence, as mine has been destroyed by lust and dark thoughts. The innate self centeredness of my human nature burns innocence (angel wings) to dust. It corrupts goodness. It destroys beauty. The inability to escape the human condition. The song reflects the complex emotions that plague humanity. It’s painful to be human.

"Wish I Had An Angel" was the second single for Finnish symphonic power metal quintet Nightwish's album Once. The song features both Marco Hietala's and Tarja Turunen's vocals. The song is still performed live with Anette Olzon, and is often used as the final song of the show.

Featured on the soundtrack of the film Alone in the Dark, it became the group's most popular single in Europe and in the United States, next to Nemo. It made it onto two U.S. film soundtracks. It reached #60 in the United Kingdom, the highest of any of the band's singles in the UK.

Nightwish - Amaranth

“Amaranth” is the second single of Finnish symphonic power metal quintet Nightwish’s Dark Passion Play album.

The video begins with two boys playing by a stream, having a good time, but when one of the boys rounds up a small point, he looks up, and sees an angel lying on a few rocks, unconscious and bleeding from her eyes. The first boy points out the angel to his friend, and they run to her aid. Throughout the video, they are seen carrying a now-blindfolded angel on two poles. They travel to a nearby village in order to heal her. Residents of the village are confused and some look at her with contempt, possibly seeing her as an object of evil even though she is an angel. This may be reference to Lucifer or the Devil. Fell from heaven during the great battle in heaven, a fallen angel is often viewed as evil.

The boys go to a house and sit the angel down on a table. One of them touches the angel's wings, and she regains consciousness. The boy tilts her chin up and a drop of blood that was bleeding from her eyes falls into his open hand, which closes. A mob of men—made up of some of the villagers who saw the boys bring in the angel before—barge into the house and they drag the two boys out. The angel, meanwhile, is thrashing either because of the blindfold, because she is terrified that she doesn't know what's going on around her and how to defend herself, or because the boys who guided her are gone. A man outside sets the house on fire with a torch. The rest of the mob is outside rejoicing as the house burns down, but the angel escapes back to heaven. It can also be argued that the mob's goal was to send the angel back to heaven, not to kill her. It can also be argued that the village is the boys' own, as is the house, and that the men were trying to protect them.

Subsequently, the band can also be seen performing underground

"Amaranth" is one of Nightwish's most successful singles reaching number 1 in Spain, Hungary and Finland. It went straight to number one in Finland and stayed at number 1 for 3 weeks, dropping to number 2 in its fourth week on the chart. "Amaranth" then returned to the top spot the following week and remained there for a further 6 weeks. In total it spent 21 weeks inside the Finnish Top 40. In the UK it failed to chart on the mainstream chart but topped the Rock Singles Chart for 5 weeks.

Nightwish - Nemo (Live)

Nemo was the first single by the Finnish symphonic power metal quintet Nightwish, from the album Once. The London Philharmonic Orchestra participated on the single. Once topped the album charts in Finland, Germany, Norway, Greece, Slovenia and Hungary. Widely successful, the single was certified gold in Finland on the day of its release. In the UK it could only chart at #87 after a chart entry of #101 the week before, but spent over 20 weeks on the top 200 plus a few re-entries. However it has been in the top 10 of the UK rock Charts as recently as May 2008, highlighting the recent acclaim the band has recently had in England.

Nemo is Latin for “nobody”. It is also the name of the mysterious captain in Jules Verne’s Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea. Also, nemo corresponds to the famous answer given by the Greek hero Odysseus to the Cyclops Polyphemus. In the Odyssey, when Polyphemus asks for his name, Odysseus tells him “Oυδίς” a name translated as “No-man” or “Nobody” which has been used allusively by later authors, such as Jules Verne. The line in the chorus “‘Nemo’ my name forever more” further suggests this meaning to be the intended one. Other thematic elements from the Odyssey appears in other Nightwish songs such as “The Siren”.

A music video was created for the song, directed by Antti Jokinen.
